Zotero

Zotero is a widely used international open-source tool for reference management. It offers numerous features to help you collect, organize, and cite literature correctly in the desired style.

Download & Installation

Zotero can be installed as a free desktop app for Windows. Additional versions, such as for macOS or Linux, can be found on the download page under the dropdown menu "Other versions." To easily save literature from your browser, it is recommended to also install the Zotero Connector.

Synchronization & Storage

In the desktop version, Zotero stores all data in local storage on your computer by default. The synchronization feature allows access to data and attached files, such as PDFs, images, or snapshots, from different devices and the collaborative management of literature within your research group.

A privacy-friendly option for active TUM members is synchronization via WebDAV. Here, you store your Zotero libraries on your personal TUM drive. To set this up, go to the Zotero settings → “Sync with WebDAV”, enter the following details, and click "Verify Server":

  • URL: webdisk.ads.mwn.de/hcwebdav/Home
  • Username: Your TUM ID prefixed with "ADS\" in the form ADS\ka21bab
  • Password: Your corresponding password

Usage Duration: You can continue using Zotero even after completing your studies or employment at TUM. However, if you use WebDAV synchronization, please note that access to your personal TUM drive will only be available for a limited time after you leave.

Zotero supports the following features in reference management and knowledge organization:
