Borrowing & Online Access

The University Library holds two million books, journals, and other media. You can borrow literature, use it on site, access it online, or have it delivered. A particular focus is on electronic media, which are available around the clock – on campus, at home, or on the go. In addition, interlibrary loan, scanning services, and document delivery services provide access to literature that is not part of the TUM collection. To use the services, you need a library account.

Library Account

A central must-have at the University Library is a library account. Your TUM StudentCard, TUM PersonalCard, or TUM GuestCard serves as your library card. Upon receipt, you are automatically activated for library use. External users can apply for a library card – and thus a library account – at the circulation desk.

Log in to our online catalog TUM OPAC and order, borrow, or read media online:

  • as a TUM member with your TUM ID
  • as an external user with your library number

Loan Services

You can either take media from the University Library’s collection directly from the shelves in the branch library of your choice and read them on site. Holdings from other branch libraries or from our stacks can be ordered or reserved via the online catalog TUM OPAC. All orders and loans are recorded in your library account; loan periods are visible there, and available renewal options can be requested.

Online Access

Search the TUM OPAC or databases and read the e-media you find online – on campus, at home, or on the go. To make this service possible, we use various IT solutions that provide you with access to electronic texts from our collection and beyond. Learn about the functions and benefits of eAccess, Institutional Login, TUM-LAN, and SFX.

Interlibrary Loan

Our online catalog TUM OPAC lists more than five million titles – but not all of them are part of our collection. Books and articles that are not available at TUM or in other local libraries can be requested via interlibrary loan. Order conveniently through the TUM OPAC and receive literature from across Germany and abroad.

Scanning & Delivery

Use in-house or external scanning services for articles, book chapters, or entire books. The TUM services dokumenTUM and Digitalization on Demand are available free of charge to TUM members. In addition, book scanners are available in all branch libraries for use by all library visitors – of course in compliance with applicable German copyright law.
