Publication Server mediaTUM
What is mediaTUM?
mediaTUM is TUM’s publication server and a platform for free information and data management in research and teaching. It allows users to upload, archive, manage, and publish content in a wide range of media formats, including PDF‑X, JPEG, SVG, and MP4. Granular rights management and version control support efficient collaboration within TUM as well as with external project partners.
All uploads to mediaTUM can be made available Open Access, in line with TUM Open Access Policy for research outputs. The publication server hosts the university bibliography, including theses. In the area of self-archiving, mediaTUM not only supports manual uploads but also uses the external delivery service DeepGreen, which automatically deposits Open‑Access‑eligible journal articles by TUM authors under “Open Access Publications.”
Supported file formats on mediaTUM include, among others:
- Documents: PDF/PDF‑A
- Images: JPEG, PNG, TIFF, SVG
- Audio/Video: MP3, WAV, MP4
- Research and tabular data: CSV, XLSX, XML
Access mediaTUM
There are two ways to use mediaTUM:
- Guests: Users who are not logged in can search for and access publicly available content on mediaTUM.
- User account: To upload publications and data or to access internal content, a one‑time activation of your personal TUM ID is required. To activate, please email our support.
Use Cases for mediaTUM
All content on mediaTUM can either be made publicly available as Open Access publications or have its visibility restricted to specific groups of users. As a result, the platform serves not only as a repository but also, through collections and project collections, as a flexible and secure digital workspace for projects and collaborations.
University Bibliography
The university bibliography documents the full texts of scholarly publications by TUM members and forms an essential basis for the public presentation of the university’s research activities. It has been freely accessible via media starting from the publication year 2008.
University Theses
Students and researchers at TUM can publish the full texts of their doctoral, habilitation, and B.A. and M.A. theses Open Access on mediaTUM.
Go to Doctoral Theses Go to Habilitation Theses Go to B.A. and M.A. Theses
Open Access Publications
In the Open Access Publications section, TUM members can make previously published articles available as secondary publications. This approach is recommended by the TUM Open Access Policy. Articles can be deposited either manually or automatically via the delivery service DeepGreen, which legally transfers Open‑Access‑eligible journal articles from participating publishers to mediaTUM.

Research Data
TUM Researchers can publish research data collectively, thereby ensuring long‑term citability, permanent access, and the reuse of research materials for further scholarly work. General information on research data publication provided by our Data Stewards is available on the TUM Research Data Hub website.
TUM.University Press
mediaTUM provides an overview of all Open Access publications from the TUM.UP BOOKS and TUM.UP THESES program areas of the university press TUM.University Press.
Collections & Projects
mediaTUM is ideal for digital collections and project documentation, for example, for research projects. Different file formats can be flexibly curated and managed within collections and made accessible to either a defined group of users or the public. Examples include photo collections or project dossiers comprising technical reports, working papers, image files, and audio recordings.
