Borrowing

Books from the textbook collections can be borrowed directly on-site. Simply go to the shelves, choose the books you need, and bring them to the circulation desk. The loan period is four weeks. Afterward, our library system automatically extends the loan for another 4 weeks – as long as no other library users have placed a reservation on the item. In total, up to five extensions are possible.

Borrowing Terms
Initial Loan Period 4 weeks
Extensions up to 5 automatic renewals à 4 weeks,
provided there are no reservations or blocks on your library account

You can check your current loan periods and renewal status in your library account via TUM OPAC.

Ordering & Reserving

You can order books via TUM OPAC from the textbook collections to another branch library. It’s also worth checking the TUM OPAC if all copies are currently borrowed on-site: Often, additional copies are available in other textbook collections and can be ordered to the branch library of your choice.

If all copies are checked out, you can reserve the title. You will receive an automatic email notification as soon as a copy becomes available.

Go to TUM OPAC

Tip: E-Books & Reference Copies

Do you have an exam coming up and urgently need a textbook, but all copies are checked out? No problem! Switch to e-books or reference copies. With these, you can study either online or on-site in the library. Small parts of the book may even be scanned under German copyright law.

For each title in the textbook collection, there is

  • either a reference copy or
  • an e-book

Search the TUM OPAC for the title you need and get either the e-book access link or the location / call number of the reference copy. This is usually not kept in the textbook collection, but in the regular reading room holdings.
