Open Access
TUM Open Access Strategy
The TUM forces the visibility of its research by promoting open access with expanding publication services and providing targeted financial support. The TUM Open Access Policy encourages all researchers to publish their scientific findings in line with the principles of the Open Access movement. In addition, TUM is a signatory to the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities.
TUM Open Access Policy
The TUM Executive Board adopted an open access policy to encourage all researchers at TUM to publish their scientific findings and research results in the spirit of the open access movement.
In its fundamental conception as a servant of society, the Technische Universität München stands for excellence in research and teaching. In doing so, it is scientifically, structurally and organizationally oriented towards the highest international standards, among which open access is also ranked.
Following the principle of open access, all research results of scientists at the Technische Universität München are to be made freely accessible throughout the world and thus be rendered as visible as possible. The Technische Universität München supports all members of the university by means of general financial and structural conditions that have been created to achieve this objective.
The TUM Executive Board invites all researchers at the Technische Universität München to publish their research results in accordance with the open access movement. Publications previously published in pay journals are to be made available to the general public as copies on mediaTUM, the media server of the Technische Universität München, as long as this procedure is not contrary to legal restrictions. mediaTUM thereby pools the research achievements of the Technische Universität München, rendering them visible externally.
It is recommended that researchers secure the right for further use of their works with the publisher, concerning future publications. The aim is to enable a secondary publication of the publisher's version on mediaTUM, concomitant with the publishers' release date or with a maximum embargo period of six months after the publication date.
All researchers at the Technische Universität München are encouraged to publish their scientific results in peer-reviewed open access journals. In their capacity as leaders, researchers at the Technische Universität München are specifically requested to also allow their employees to publish in accordance with open access. In recruitment and appointment procedures, open access publications are increasingly consulted for the assessment of candidates.
The University Library of the Technische Universität München, as the operator of mediaTUM, supports and advises university-wide on the implementation of open access.

Publication Options for Articles
In publishing, three Open Access models are commonly distinguished:
- Gold Open Access: Original first publication of an article in an Open Access journal.
- Diamond Open Access: Original first publication of an article in an Open Access journal, with publication costs covered by an institution rather than by the article’s author.
- Green Open Access: Secondary publication of an already published article in institutional or disciplinary repositories.
At TUM, publication options are available for all Open Access models. We are happy to assist you with the various possibilities for Open Access publishing.
