Working at the University Library
The staff of university library is a dedicated team of about 120 people – some with traditional library backgrounds, others with unique expertise. Our six departments reflect the breadth of our academic support services.

You can qualify for positions in academic libraries through various paths of library vocational training. The University Library offers you specific options:
Specialist in Media and Information Services
The University Library offers training for specialists in media and information services (Fachangestellte für Medien- und Informationsdienste, FaMI). Information on the FaMI profession and current job openings at TUM can be found on the AuTUM training center’s website.
FaMIs work in public and academic libraries, in state and ecclesiastical library institutions, or in special libraries. At our library, FaMIs primarily assist with user and information services, and tasks in other library types may include media acquisition, cataloging, administration, and public relations.

Academic Library Training in Bavaria
Bachelor’s in Library and Information Management – Practical Training
This six-semester dual degree program provides a foundation in library and information science through four semesters of theory at the University of Applied Sciences for Public Service in Bavaria (Hochschule für den öffentlichen Dienst, HöfD) and two practical modules at a scientific library in Bavaria, such as TUM’s University Library.

Scientific Librarian – Traineeship
Training as a Scientific Librarian is available after obtaining a university degree or a PhD. This two-year program consists of one year of practical training at a scientific library (library traineeship) and one year of theoretical instruction at the Bavarian Library Academy. The first-year traineeship can be completed at TUM’s University Library.

Short-Term Internships for Library Training
We offer short-term internships for those in library training:
- Aspiring Specialist in Media and Information Services
- Bachelor’s students in Library and Information Management at the University of Applied Sciences for Public Service in Bavaria (Hochschule für den öffentlichen Dienst, HöfD)
- Bachelor’s and master’s students in Library or Information Management from other universities
