Single-cell oil (SCO) produced in biorefineries from oleaginous yeasts is an emerging sustainable alternative to mineral and plant-based oils. The unconventional yeast Cutaneotrichosporon oleaginosus has particularly drawn attention for its high SCO yields. In addition, C. oleaginosus can serve as a microbial cell factory for such value-added co-products. In the first part of this work, the potential of squalene production with C. oleaginosus – a high-value compound for the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries – was investigated. The second part of this work focuses on tools for… mehr
Cosmic and solar radiation allow us to investigate myriad phenomena in astrophysics and heliophysics, and we can use them to study the surface composition of the Moon and other planets in the solar system. At the same time, mitigating the exposure of spacecraft and their crew to high-energy radiation is one of the greatest challenges of human spaceflight. This thesis presents the development of two instruments for studying cosmic and solar particles and the secondary radiation created by them. One is the RadMap Telescope, a radiation monitor designed for characterizing the environment… mehr
Determining the far-field radiation pattern of an antenna from measurements of its near field is a common task in the field of antenna characterization. Near-field measurements performed on-site are of great interest, as they can considerably extend the capabilities of traditional antenna characterization in anechoic chambers.
This thesis deals with the measurement and transformation of modulated electromagnetic fields that are recorded on-site with the help of uncrewed aerial vehicles. A corresponding near-field measurement setup is presented, measurements are examined and a… mehr
Towards a Greenhouse Gas-Free Basic Energy Supply
This dissertation analyzes the safety and efficiency issues in tower crane operations, indicating the wrong lifting timeline as the root cause. Then, it proposes an operation navigation system based on 4D BIM and AR, including 4D BIM-based lifting planning, AR for operation visualization, and AR for operation monitoring and hint. This new concept can provide the optimal lifting timeline for tower crane operation, improving two issues. Also, it can be applied to many valuable construction situations, such as modular construction, automatic tower crane, and infrastructure.
Additive manufacturing (AM) using laser powder bed fusion (PBF-LB/M) has many advantages such as design freedom and sustainability. However, AM also suffers from internal defects that limit its functionality. Furthermore, post-treatment methods like hot isostatic pressing (HIP) promise to enhance material properties. This work aims to develop a machine learning model using artificial neural networks, to predict PBF-LB/M or HIP process parameters based on quality characteristics.

This thesis focuses on model order reduction for non-linear magnetodynamic-mechanical systems. Using Maxwell's equations, a framework is established and validated with benchmarks. The study explores model order reduction and hyperreduction techniques, specifically DEIM and ECSW, evaluating them on academic and benchmark systems. Improvements to ECSW target non-linear domain areas and reduce post-processing costs. A practical use case with an active magnetic bearing demonstrates reduced-order models in monitoring scenarios, showcasing their potential to enhance simulation efficiency.

For most humans, bipedal walking is the natural mode of locomotion—so instinctive that it requires little conscious thought. Despite nearly 2,500 years of research, the biomechanics of human gait remains a complex puzzle. This book revisits and proposes several mechanisms of bipedal walking that have been subjects of scientific discussion for several decades. It explores gait stabilization, efficiency, and general dynamics. Readers will encounter surprising facts and a mechanistic explanation for the puzzling double-humped ground reaction force profile observed in human walking. The… mehr
Coda wave interferometry (CWI) is a novel non-destructive method for monitoring the integrity of concrete structures. It is highly sensitive to even weak material changes, making it an effective early warning system for potential damage. By comparing two ultrasonic waveforms, CWI identifies velocity shifts in the late-arriving coda waves, particularly in heterogeneous media where scattering occurs.
This study analyzed the effects of temperature, humidity, and stress on coda wave velocity by means of the stretching method, identifying linear and non-linear relationships. Long-… mehr

Model-Based Predictive Control of Electric Drives - Trilingual Edition
For more than 50 years, the so-called field-oriented control is standard for controlled electric drive systems. However, due to the system characteristics, an arbitrary improvement of the controller properties is not possible. Predictive control methods that do not require cascade structures are an alternative. This trilingual book is the first to provide a clear and easy-to-understand introduction to the field of model-based predictive control in electric drives. Model-based predictive controllers, known from classical control engineering and applied with great success in process… mehr
Boundary integral equations for the analysis of scattering and radiation scenarios with reduced computational effort, increased reliability, and increased accuracy are discussed. The contributions consist of two parts: first, the simulation of scenarios involving perfectly conducting objects and second, the post-processing of measured radiated and scattered fields for near-field far-field transformations, involving settings with complex measurement data, echo suppression, and phase retrieval.
